Meaning & Origin of MATILDA ROSE: Of German origin, Matilda means "strength in battle" - William the Conqueror's wife was Queen Matilda and they brought the name to Britain. It is also Australian slang for a bushman's pack, as in the traditional Australian anthem, Waltzing Matilda. ROSE is of Latin & French origin with the literal meaning of the flower by the same name. It was Michelle Williams who came up with the name Matilda whilst riding the subway in New York. Based on her love for the Roald Dahl book of the same name, it was fitting that she would chose a name with such Australian connections given Matilda's proud Australian father. It is such a tragedy that Heath will never get to see his little girl grow up. Having said that, he leaves behind an impressive list of movies for Matilda to be proud of
