Meaning & Origin of MALIA ANN: Malia is of Hawaiian origin and is a variant of Mary. It can be noted that President Obama's half sister is named Maya and his beloved grandmother, who passed away just days short of seeing her grandson get elected to the presidency of the United States, was named Madelyn. Also, First Lady Michelle's mother is named Marian. Perhaps Malia was named in honour of these important women in the Obama family. Ann is of Hebrew origin, meaning "favoured by God, grace". Ann was the name of President Obama's late mother.
