There were reports that because Sam was born during the production of Scary Movie 3, the movie starring both her parents, that they had wanted a name with the letters S & M in it. Other reports state that Charlie named his daughter after a pet cat, much to Denise's disdain, as she had always wanted a pretty girlie name like Sophia (a name she had dreamed about) or Emma. The J is thought to be an abbreviation for Joni, the name of Denise's mother, who passed away in November 2007
